The Verdun bit with its D-rings allows the rider to exercise good control of the horse's direction. The fixed rings protect the corners from pinching. This type of mouthpiece channels the horses and prevents the horse from passing the tongue over the bit.
The rubber helps soften the action of the bit, particularly for young horses. This bit is less punitive than its uncoated metal equivalent. The flexibility of this material makes it possible to make flexible barrels in order to avoid the "nutcracker" effect of an articulated bit, while having lighter support on the tongue than a bit with a rigid barrel.
